About the event

Part 1 Horsemanship Training: GENERAL HORSEMANSHIP is available for all new and continuing volunteers new and interested in developing skills related to general horsemanship. We ask that you attend orientation prior to training. Topics covered will include:

  • haltering a horse using a rope halter 
  • grooming a horse the SHRC way
  • identifying tack needed for lessons
  • saddling and bridling a horse for an equine assisted lesson
  • leading a horse to the crossties

After attending Orientation, we ask that all new volunteers attend Part 1 and 2 trainings with us at the ranch. Each training last approximately 3 hours and will be hands on experience with our horses.  

Part 1: HORSEMANSHIP TRAINING - Grooming, Haltering, & Tacking (3 hours) This training is required for all new volunteers. Please attend orientation prior to any trainings. 

Part 2: THERAPEUTIC LESSON TRAINING - Grooming/Tacking for a lesson, Leading a horse in a lesson, Sidewalking in a lesson (3 hours) Part 1 is a prerequisite for this training and must be completed prior to this training. 

Part 3: HORSE CARE TRAINING -for those interested in supporting with horse care (2.5 hours) Part 1 & 2 are prerequisites for this training and must be completed prior to this training.
